ED MAJKOWSKI

Ed Majkowski (b. 1994, New Jersey) is a painter based in Kennebunk, Maine. He takes everything he knows about the world, puts it on the ground, and rebuilds it. The work begins outdoors, with dozens of studies of the landscape. Back in the studio, he cuts the paint itself free of its supports and sculpts the pieces onto a single panel. He calls the process mindfulness meditation in reverse.

The method dates to 2020, when he watched people occupy the small pieces of nature around their neighborhoods at all hours — a symbiosis forming with ground they had spent years driving past. His subject is the distance between arriving somewhere quiet and actually becoming quiet. What he paints is how much work that relief takes. Each painting is a record of what he steals from his own studies — the few passages where something happened that he did not engineer.

Majkowski holds an MFA from Queens College, City University of New York, and a BS in Fine Art from Marist College at Istituto Lorenzo de' Medici, Florence, with additional study at the New York Studio School. His work has been shown at Sideshow Gallery, Brooklyn, and Plaxall Gallery, Long Island City, and was selected for the Studio School's alumni exhibition on Artsy. In 2026 he was Visiting Artist and Speaker at Cranbrook Academy of Art. His solo exhibition The Pressure of Looking — Studies in Stillness ran at his Kennebunk studio the same summer.
